Intro to waves part II.

Arrived about 12.00 and found Miguel had just arrived.

Miguel measured the wind speed at around 10-14 knots so I hung around a while to wait for it to pick up!

After a while I rigged up the 6.4m and headed out. The surf was about 3ft so this was intro to waves part II. Could I get out through the surf to see what it was like out back? In Intro to waves part I won the walk of shame award 2003 so the stakes were high :-)

Round 1. The wind had filled in a bit so there was enough power to get going but any lulls could be a problem. Three attempts to get out led to a swim after taking a dive going over a wave. But on the 4th attempt I did it negotiated all the breaking waves and got out back.

Hold on that wasn't quite it. There were occassional head high waves popping up from the swell out back and just as I thought I'd made it one jumped up and broke right over my head, s**t!

I held onto my kit and after recovering the rig found that something wasn't quite right. No power, a big tear in the sail. Ok a swim back in and a walk back to the car to be greated by a welcoming committee of Al and Shem. Oh joy.

Al decided to windsurf after considering surfing with Shem so I thought I'd rig my smaller 5.3m and go back out.

Round 2. I launched just after Al and headed out. That was the last time I saw Al until I got back to the car. Apparently he went upwind overpowered whilst I beared away to gain power with the smaller sail.

It took 2 or 3 attempts to get outback this time. Made it out back and thought right, now I'll head upwind to try to find Al and get back to where I'd launched.

But just as I relaxed another big swell jacked up. I didn't have a lot of speed at the time but made it over the wave. But wow, where had the water gone. Opps I was airbourne! Unfortunately I didn't remain attached to my board. The wind ripped the rig away from me, leaving me mid air, kinda pedaling a non existent bike! It was like falling out of an upstairs window. Cool!

After a swim that seemed to take ages I found my kit undamaged, waterstarted away and headed back in for another walk back to the car.

I got further than my first effort in the waves so I don't mind the walk. Maybe in waves part III I'll get to play out back for a while. I think it would help if it was a bit smaller out back to give me a break, this head high stuff is a bit big for me at the mo!

I'll give myself 4 stars just for going out there and for the entertainment value for everyone else. This time last year I'd have stayed in the car. I hope the onlookers enjoyed the show, I know I did ;-)
